Houthi rebels seize Perim Island in Red Sea 'kill box,' official warns

Houthi rebels seized Perim Island in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital global shipping chokepoint, but a former Pentagon official warns they've entered a vulnerable US Navy 'kill box'.

Houthi rebels have seized control of Perim Island, a strategic location in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital global shipping chokepoint. The island's capture came after a month-long offensive along Yemen’s western coast, resulting in the deaths of over 1,500 soldiers and a "painful" defeat for Yemen’s government.

What happened

A former Pentagon official, Morgan Murphy, warned that the Houthi rebels have entered a vulnerable US Navy "kill box" by seizing the island. Murphy stated that the island, which has a 1.85-kilometer runway and three military hangars, is a pivotal maritime vantage point that has been targeted for control by various forces for hundreds of years.

Murphy emphasized that the US military has incredible firepower in the region and that the island is uninhabitable, with no water or vegetation. He warned that the Houthis have massed their troops on the island, making it a potential target for the US Navy. Murphy also noted that the US military holds overwhelming force options if commanders elect to target the island.

The developments come amid diplomatic maneuvering between Washington, Riyadh, and the Houthis. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has urged President Donald Trump to authorize US military strikes against Houthi positions, but Trump has declined direct intervention. The US administration has no immediate plans for direct combat involvement but will continue offering intelligence assistance.
