Hurricane Isaias has caused significant damage and loss of life in the southern United States, with four people confirmed dead and hundreds of thousands left without power. The storm made landfall in Florida on Friday evening, bringing powerful winds and heavy rain that felled trees and ripped roofs off buildings.
According to officials, two deaths were reported in Alabama and two in Florida, including a woman who was killed when a tree fell on her house. Another man died from carbon monoxide poisoning after running a generator in a garage that was not properly ventilated.
The storm has left at least 600,000 people without power across several states, with Alabama, Florida, and Georgia all declaring states of emergency ahead of its arrival. Mandatory evacuation orders were issued to thousands of people in Florida and Alabama.
Rescue efforts were underway, with officials rescuing people from vehicles submerged in floodwaters. The Florida National Guard shared pictures of a truck stuck in a flood ditch, saying soldiers had pulled its occupants to safety.
Governors in the affected states have warned of continued risks from flooding and strong winds, with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis describing the situation as 'very hazardous'. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has warned that the Carolinas and Georgia could see floods from up to 10 inches of rainfall.
