What happened
Iranian forces have downed at least two American MQ-1 unmanned aircraft in recent days, according to U.S. officials. The location where the drones were brought down and the specific variant of the MQ-1 involved are unclear.
The MQ-1 unmanned aircraft, which include the Predator and Gray Eagle variants, are used for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions and can also be equipped with Hellfire missiles for striking targets. These drones can provide persistent surveillance over the Strait of Hormuz, tracking Iranian military activity and monitoring threats to American forces and commercial shipping.
The loss of the two drones could be significant, with the cost ranging from $8 million for the older MQ-1 Predators to tens of millions of dollars for the Gray Eagle variant. This incident adds to the list of drone losses suffered by the U.S. in its conflict with Iran, with at least 24 MQ-9 Reapers lost, representing a total loss of roughly $720 million, and an MQ-4C Triton destroyed, valued at about $150 million.
