What happened
A 25-year-old Iranian protester, Alireza Sepahi, was hanged at dawn, just hours after marrying his imprisoned fiancee, Mahshad Keshani, in a phone call. Sepahi and Keshani were arrested during protests in January and were among 62 people detained for the protest in Alikhani Square in Isfahan.
According to the Oslo-based nonprofit Iran Human Rights, Sepahi was one of 12 prisoners sentenced to death for the protest, and his execution was the fifth to be carried out. The Iranian regime has officially executed 34 protesters to date for the demonstrations held in December and January.
The Iranian regime refused to return Sepahi's remains to his family for burial in Isfahan, instead shipping them to the city of Kashan, about 125 miles away. Human rights organizations, including Iran Human Rights and Human Rights Watch, have condemned Iran's execution spree against protesters as unlawful and marked by grossly unfair and summary proceedings.
