Iran faces an unprecedented economic crisis as its oil revenue dries up, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stating it will have no oil at sea and no oil revenue this week for the first time in history.

What happened

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that Iran will have no oil at sea and no oil revenue this week for the first time in history. This is due to a deliberate campaign by the US that began with a military assault, followed by a blockade of Iranian commerce, and is now aimed at isolating Tehran economically.

The US naval blockade, referred to as the "Iron Wall," has prevented Iranian oil exports while protecting international traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. The blockade is part of a broader campaign called Operation Economic Outcast, which seeks to sever Tehran from remaining sources of trade and revenue.

The effects of the blockade are becoming increasingly visible inside Iran, with the country's currency sinking to a record low and inflation climbing above 70 percent. Iranians are exhausting their savings, losing jobs, and cutting spending on basic needs as the economic crisis deepens.

Iran's top national security official, Mohsen Rezaei, has warned of the country's difficult economic circumstances, and President Masoud Pezeshkian has acknowledged that economic conditions have worsened. The Iranian government has adopted a "new posture" to manage the crisis, but the situation remains dire.

The US intends to maintain the blockade, allowing international energy traffic through the Strait of Hormuz while continuing to block Iranian exports. The administration says it can maintain the blockade for as long as necessary, and War Secretary Pete Hegseth has urged Tehran to "make the right choice" while it still can.
