Iran Proposes Reopening Strait of Hormuz in Exchange for US Acceptance of Nuclear Deal
CBS News

Iran proposes reopening the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for US acceptance of a nuclear deal, with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stating Iran will abide by commitments if the US accepts the proposal.

What happened

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the US accepting Iran's latest proposal. The proposal includes restarting talks with the US as an initial step toward a final nuclear deal. However, US President Trump has rejected the proposal, stating that it would not be acceptable.

Pezeshkian expressed distrust towards the US, citing the country's history of attacking Iran during negotiations. He also emphasized that Iran would abide by any commitments made if the US accepts the proposal. The Iranian foreign minister's proposal was announced during the United Nations General Assembly in New York City.

Pezeshkian also discussed his communications with Iran's supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, who has not been seen in public since the US-Israeli attack that killed his father. Pezeshkian claimed that Mojtaba Khamenei has no specific ongoing health issues and that they have met twice, once for over seven hours.

The US and Iran have struggled to reach a deal on Iran's nuclear program, with the US insisting that Iran must stop enriching uranium. Pezeshkian stated that Iran would allow UN nuclear inspectors into the country and that developing nuclear weapons is forbidden.
