Iran has reported that 7 vessels, including oil tankers, were hit and caught fire in the northern Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.
What happened
According to Iran's state-run Islamic Republic News Agency, the Iranian navy said that 4 ships transferring oil cargoes had been using unauthorized routes despite previous warnings to maritime companies. 3 additional vessels struck mines west of the Strait of Hormuz, leaving them immobilized after catching fire.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations reported a separate incident involving a tanker near the Strait of Hormuz, where a tanker was struck by an unknown projectile, starting a fire that was later extinguished. All crew members were reported safe, and there was no environmental impact.
The incidents occurred amid ongoing indirect negotiations between the US and Iran, aimed at ending months of conflict. The US and Iran are discussing a potential agreement that would address Iran's nuclear program and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
