Israel Prepares for Potential Strikes on Iran

Israel's Prime Minister has directed the military to prepare for new attacks on Iran, but called off a planned operation due to opposition from the US President.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly instructed the military to prepare for new attacks on Iran, according to sources familiar with the matter.

What happened

A planned multi-day bombing campaign, set to take place in mid-October, was called off due to opposition from US President Donald Trump, who wants to avoid escalating the conflict until after the US midterm elections.

The planned strikes would have targeted Iran's civilian infrastructure, including electricity plants, as well as nuclear facilities and regime targets.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that indirect diplomacy with the US is ongoing, despite expressing skepticism about the US administration's commitment to peace.

The developments come as tensions between Iran and the US remain high, with Iran's national security council chief saying that the country will not allow any enriched nuclear material to leave its borders.

The situation has also led to increased oil prices, with Brent crude opening at around $109 per barrel and average US gasoline prices reaching $4.26 per gallon.
