Israel Tightens Pilot Security Checks After Attempted Plane Crash
The Epoch Times

Israel increases security checks on pilots after a co-pilot allegedly stabbed the pilot and attempted to crash a Flydubai flight from the UAE to Israel.

What happened

Israel is set to increase security checks on pilots flying into the country after a co-pilot on a Flydubai flight from the United Arab Emirates to Israel allegedly stabbed the pilot and attempted to crash the plane. The incident occurred on September 30, 2026, and was defused when passengers helped subdue the co-pilot, allowing other on-duty pilots to safely land the aircraft in Saudi Arabia.

The Flydubai flight, carrying 174 people, mostly Israelis, was diverted to Saudi Arabia after an emergency signal was sent. Saudi authorities have arrested and interrogated the co-pilot, but no motive has been given for the incident.

According to a spokesperson for the Israeli prime minister's office, Israel will now conduct security checks on all pilots flying into the country, including those employed by non-Israeli carriers. The government has instructed authorities to ramp up security on flights to Israel, with a focus on knowing the pilots' identities and conducting thorough security checks.

Aviation experts note that pilots already undergo extensive background checks and continuous medical and psychological assessments. However, individual countries and airlines are responsible for implementing screening and security standards, which can vary.
