A video of Israeli UN Ambassador Danny Danon offering a Starlink device to an Iranian representative has gone viral, with around 9 million views across social media platforms.
The video, which was posted by Danon on social media, shows him approaching an Iranian representative with the device, which was declined. According to analytics, nearly 40% of the video's viewers on Instagram are located in Iran.
The encounter was a follow-up to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's address to the UN General Assembly, where he displayed a Starlink device and delivered a message aimed at the Iranian people.
The video's reach in Iran is considered unusual for an Israeli diplomatic account, and Danon's office views it as significant given the message of freedom and freedom of expression accompanying the Starlink offer.
However, a counter-campaign has emerged, with accounts believed to be Iranian recirculating a years-old video of a former Israeli ambassador being escorted from the General Assembly during a protest. This has been characterized as a disinformation campaign intended to counter the attention surrounding Danon's video.
