Israeli Man Sentenced to 4.5 Years for Spying on Behalf of Iran

An Israeli man has been sentenced to 4.5 years in prison for spying on behalf of Iran, gathering intelligence on former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

What happened

An Israeli man, Fares Abu al-Hija, has been sentenced to 4.5 years in prison for spying on behalf of Iran. He gathered intelligence on former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and even visited Gallant's home in the moshav of Amikam.

Abu al-Hija, 32, was convicted of contacting a foreign agent and performed various tasks for the agent, including purchasing and hiding cell phones, installing communication apps, and documenting the locations of the hidden devices. He received a total of $3,600 for his services.

The court considered Abu al-Hija's guilty plea, remorse, and lack of prior convictions when determining his sentence. The judge also took into account the defendant's family circumstances, including his parents' poor health and the impact of his arrest on their mental state.

In addition to the 4.5-year prison sentence, Abu al-Hija was also given a two-year suspended sentence. The prosecution had requested a sentence of five to eight years in prison, citing the potential harm caused by Abu al-Hija's actions and the fact that they were committed during a time of war.
