Israel's political parties are set to meet with President Isaac Herzog to start the process of forming a new government.
What happened
Herzog will determine which party leader gets the first opportunity to form a coalition. The parties will have six weeks to form a government, and if they fail, another election may be held in March. Meanwhile, authorities are investigating possible foreign interference in the recent election, with serious suspicions emerging about foreign funding intended to influence the vote.
Despite the investigation, the election results are not expected to change. The threat from Iran remains a central concern, with President Donald Trump confirming he had a good conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about Iran. Tehran has warned that if attacks resume, its retaliation will reach beyond the Middle East.
Military experts say Israel still has work to do to prevent Iran from rebuilding its nuclear program and to address the threat of Iran's ballistic missile arsenal. With another confrontation possible, many in the Middle East are watching for signs that military action could come after the U.S. midterm elections.
