Kenya has confirmed its first Ebola death, a Kenyan citizen who had been living in DR Congo. The patient died in Nairobi after arriving from DR Congo, where over 4,000 people have died from the disease this year.

What happened

A Kenyan citizen who had been living in the Democratic Republic of Congo for seven years has died from Ebola in Nairobi, Kenya's capital city. The patient, who fell ill a month ago, had been treated in several hospitals in DR Congo before arriving in Nairobi, where he died days later.

The Kenyan Health Minister, Aden Duale, confirmed that the patient had tested positive for the Bundibugyo species of Ebola, a relatively rare form of the disease. The patient's symptoms included fever, chills, intense fatigue, and bleeding under the skin.

At least 28 contacts, including family members and healthcare workers, have been identified, and health authorities are tracing a further 23 passengers and four crew members who traveled on the same flight as the patient. Kenya has stepped up surveillance at airports and border crossings to prevent the spread of the disease.

The current outbreak in DR Congo has resulted in over 4,000 deaths, making it the second most deadly known outbreak of the disease. The World Health Organization has recorded 4,114 deaths out of 8,544 cases in the current outbreak.
