Russian drone strikes hit Kyiv's bridges for four consecutive days, injuring two people, as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made a surprise visit to show support against Russia's invasion.

What happened

A Russian drone strike hit the Pivnichnyi Bridge in Kyiv, Ukraine, on Sunday, injuring two people and causing a large fireball. The bridge was struck for the second day in a row, and the attack is part of a series of drone strikes on critical infrastructure in Kyiv, including major bridges.

The Pivdennyi Bridge was also hit multiple times earlier in the week, and the attacks have caused gridlock in parts of the city. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the roadway of the Pivnichnyi Bridge was hit, and repair teams are working to fix the damage.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made a surprise visit to Kyiv, meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and reaffirming Germany's support for Ukraine. Merz said Germany's security depends on the outcome of the war and that his country will continue to provide support to Ukraine.

The Russian military said it would intensify strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions, and the Russian defense ministry said it would respond to comments made by Zelensky earlier in the week. The Ukrainian president has made repeated appeals for Western allies to provide more military support to the country.
