Latvia Extends Ban on Occasional Bus Services to Russia and Belarus

Latvia Extends Ban on Occasional Bus Services to Russia and Belarus
LSM Latvia

Latvia has extended its ban on occasional passenger bus services to Russia and Belarus until October 31, 2027, citing national security threats and risks of intelligence gathering and recruitment.

The government of Latvia has decided to extend a ban on occasional passenger bus services to Russia and Belarus for another year.

What happened

The ban, which was initially implemented for one year, has been extended until 31 October 2027. This decision was made due to concerns over national security, as group travel to and from these countries poses a risk of intelligence gathering and recruitment.

The ban applies to all carriers, regardless of their legal entity or vehicle registration country. However, regular passenger transport services are not currently restricted. The Ministry of Transport has drafted amendments to the Road Transport Act, which would ban regular and occasional passenger bus services to Russia and Belarus from 10 January 2027, as well as transit journeys through Latvia.
