What happened
Lithuania is set to activate its state reserve for the first time during the Vytis Vault 2026 mobilisation exercise. The state reserve, which consists of food, medical supplies, and other resources, will be used to supply participants with oil, groats, and flour.
The exercise, which began last Friday and will continue until October 3, aims to test the country's wartime supply system and procedures for supplying food from the state reserve. The Agriculture Ministry will oversee the activation of the state reserve, which will also involve coordination and management with economic entities.
The Vytis Vault 2026 exercise is Lithuania's largest annual mobilisation drill, and it will be held in conjunction with the Lithuanian Riflemen's Union exercise Strong Dzūkas 2026. The latter will focus on protecting important sites, maintaining public order, and conducting defensive operations.
The state reserve is typically used during emergencies or crises, such as when mobilisation is declared or when a state of emergency or martial law is introduced. Its activation during the Vytis Vault 2026 exercise will provide an opportunity to test its effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.
