Lithuania is set to deploy up to 100 troops to its border with Russia's Kaliningrad region.
What happened
The move is a precautionary measure to stop Russian men seeking asylum from potential military mobilisation. Interior Minister Martynas Katelynas requested military assistance due to a lack of personnel in the State Border Guard Service to handle existing threats.
The decision was based on information and indications provided by security agencies, including a recent incident on Latvia's border with Belarus where migrants were accompanied by masked individuals who threatened Latvian soldiers.
The troops are expected to assist border guards through October 16, with the government considering the deployment period reasonable and potentially extendable if necessary.
Despite the deployment, the Border Guard Service reported that the situation along the Kaliningrad border was calm, with no irregular migrants detected for five consecutive days on the Belarus border.
