Lithuania's Prime Minister, Mindaugas Sinkevičius, stated that Russia is attempting to spread fear and divide Lithuanian society. However, he assured that Lithuania is preparing for such efforts by investing in its defense capabilities.
Sinkevičius made these comments after a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Brussels. He emphasized that while the risk of Russian attacks against NATO remains, the threat level has not significantly increased or decreased.
Rutte added that NATO has response options for grey zone incidents, such as drone incursions, acts of sabotage, or cyber attacks. He urged calm, stating that NATO is investing in its defense and Russia's economy is not in a good place.
Recent months have seen an increase in acts of sabotage attributed to Russia, as well as Russian drones violating the airspace of eastern NATO states. Despite this, Sinkevičius and Rutte expressed confidence in their ability to respond to potential threats.
