French President Emmanuel Macron has been forced to correct his statement regarding a recent shooting in Trappes, a suburb of Paris.
What happened
A shooting occurred in Trappes, resulting in the death of one man and injuring a 12-year-old girl. The suspected attacker, identified as Kevin T., was arrested with an antique gun, tear gas canisters, and cocaine.
Initially, President Macron claimed that the attack was the first time France had experienced a terror attack motivated by race or religion. However, this statement was met with criticism, as many pointed out that there have been previous instances of terrorist attacks targeting people based on their religion, including the 2012 attack on a Jewish school in Toulouse and the 2015 hostage situation at a kosher supermarket in Paris.
Politicians, including National Rally leader Jordan Bardella and French MEP Marion Maréchal, spoke out against Macron's claim, citing examples of past attacks on Jewish and Christian communities in France.
Following the backlash, Macron revised his statement, acknowledging that there have been attacks targeting Christians and Jews because of their faith. He emphasized that none of these victims should be forgotten.
