Melania Trump brokers a localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine to evacuate the elderly from Oleshky, a city on the brink of disaster due to war and scarcity of resources.

Melania Trump has successfully negotiated a temporary ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, allowing for the evacuation of the predominantly elderly population from the war-torn city of Oleshky.

What happened

The First Lady of the United States announced that she had persuaded both countries to halt military action temporarily, enabling the safe passage of civilians. The ceasefire is set to begin on October 29.

According to the White House, the situation in Oleshky is dire, with the city's resources severely depleted. The city, which was captured by Russian forces in February 2022, lacks basic necessities like electricity, heat, and running water.

The plight of Oleshky's residents came to Melania Trump's attention during the United Nations General Assembly in September. She has previously worked to reunify Ukrainian children with their parents who were taken by the Russians and has written to Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging him to consider the children affected by the war.

The localized ceasefire was established using existing channels that had been used to help reunify children with their families. An impartial American media organization will document the evacuation process to ensure that the wishes of each family are respected.
