Michigan Democrat Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed's ties to the Muslim Brotherhood have raised concerns among Republican senators, who believe his connections to the group pose a national security risk.
Senator Ted Cruz warned that if El-Sayed is elected and appointed to committees with access to classified materials, it could put US service members at risk. Cruz has introduced a bill to label the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization, which has been stuck in the Senate for over a year.
Other Republican senators, including Tim Sheehy and John Barrasso, have expressed support for designating the Muslim Brotherhood as a foreign terrorist organization, citing its history of spreading radical Islamic extremism and threatening American security.
El-Sayed's opponent, Mike Rogers, released an ad portraying El-Sayed's ideology as a national security threat. The report also cited an internal Muslim Brotherhood document seized by the FBI that described a campaign to undermine Western civilization from within.
