President Donald Trump announced that Montana will host a new US military super range for testing advanced weapons and technologies, including autonomous, space, and electronic warfare technologies.

President Donald Trump has confirmed that Montana will be the location of a new military super range for testing advanced weapons and technologies.

What happened

During a midterm campaign rally in Kalispell, Montana, Trump announced that the Department of War will establish a new super range in the state to test autonomous weapons, space weapons, and other forms of electronic warfare technology, including supersonics and hypersonics.

The president's announcement comes after the government confirmed in September that it has weapons in space, with Air Force Secretary Troy Meink stating that America has on-orbit space control weapons capable of defending against hostile adversary action.

Senator Tim Sheehy (R-Mt.) has been a strong advocate for getting the range built in Montana and has secured $10 million for a feasibility study through the National Defense Authorization Act.

Sheehy believes that the advanced weaponry now available to the United States requires a new class of testing and evaluation requirements, and that Montana is the ideal location for the super range due to its vast landscapes, innovative spirit, and proud tradition of military service.
