Charisma News

NATO's eastern flank is on high alert due to Russian drone strikes and sabotage, with Poland being a primary target. European leaders warn that Russia is testing NATO's defenses.

What happened

NATO's eastern flank has been put on high alert due to increased Russian drone strikes and sabotage. European leaders warn that Russia is testing NATO's defenses with these actions. Poland, which borders Russia and its ally Belarus, has been a target of these incursions, with drones, rockets, and acts of sabotage impacting the country daily.

A Polish shopping complex was destroyed by a fire in 2024, with investigators pointing to Russian involvement. Additionally, over 150 acts of arson and sabotage have been linked to Russia across Europe since 2024. Russian drones have also struck targets near the Polish border, including a Ukrainian train station.

NATO fighter jets have intercepted and shot down Russian drones over Lithuania, one of the Baltic nations positioned on Russia's doorstep. The Suwalki Gap, a strategic border area between Poland and Lithuania, is critically vulnerable to Russian disruption, which could cut off the Baltic nations from their European allies.

In response to these threats, Poland has accelerated its defense buildup, with defense spending surpassing 5% of its GDP. The country has also strengthened its alliance with the United States, with the US planning to establish a permanent military base in Poland.
