A severe flash flood has struck Nepal, resulting in the disappearance of at least five individuals. The disaster completely destroyed a bridge and numerous homes, causing widespread devastation.
What happened
The flash flood was triggered by a landslide that obstructed the flow of the Budhi Gangraki river, forming a dam that eventually led to the catastrophic flood. Residents in the area were forced to evacuate as the flood destroyed homes and other structures.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported that at least five people are missing, and the flood has damaged or destroyed four bridges, swept away approximately three dozen houses, and damaged a hydropower plant construction site. Several power and communication towers were also damaged along the riverside.
Nepal's army has been actively involved in rescue efforts, utilizing helicopters and ground troops to rescue stranded individuals. By Sunday afternoon, they had successfully rescued 49 people. This incident follows a massive flood in August that was triggered by a glacier collapse near the Nepal-China border, resulting in over 1,500 deaths and 5,000 missing individuals.
