What happened
A major river in Nepal has overflowed, destroying homes, bridges, and damaging a hydropower station. The flood occurred in the central Gorkha district, where around 50 people were rescued from the bank of the Budhi Gandaki River. Five people are reported missing, but no casualties have been confirmed yet.
The flood swept away about a dozen houses and several suspension bridges. A hydroelectric project was also damaged, with some construction equipment carried away. The river's water levels rose significantly, from 2 meters to nearly 8.5 meters, within a couple of hours.
The cause of the latest flood is still unclear, with some attributing it to a landslide blocking the river or its tributary, while others suggest an ice-avalanche may have occurred. The flood has forced families to flee their homes, leaving them uncertain about safe shelter and access to essential supplies.
The charity Save the Children is mobilizing an emergency team to respond to the flood. The organization's director in Nepal expressed concern about the impact on children, who may have lost their homes, schools, and communities, and are still recovering from the devastating floods in August.
