New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's statement on the anniversary of the Hamas attack against Israel sparks outrage, with some calling it insulting to Jews.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's statement on the anniversary of the Hamas attack against Israel has sparked outrage. The statement was criticized for being insulting to Jews, with some calling it "disgusting" and a attempt to "gaslight the Jewish community."

What happened

On October 7, 2023, Hamas attacked Israeli communities, including those at a music festival, near Gaza, killing over 1,000 people and abducting hundreds of hostages. Mayor Mamdani's statement acknowledged the attacks, but also discussed Israel's reaction, calling it a "genocide" in Gaza. The statement was criticized for omitting the words "Jew" or "Jews" and "hostage", which some saw as a deliberate attempt to downplay the suffering of the Jewish community.

The criticism came from Washington Examiner columnist Joe Concha, who said that the statement was "intentionally insulting" and "designed to gaslight the Jewish community". Concha also stated that the statement was a "nod" to the "anti-Semitic far left" and that Mayor Mamdani cared more about them than the Jewish community in New York.

Mayor Mamdani's statement also mentioned the ongoing suffering of Palestinians in Gaza, including the killing of over 74,000 Palestinians, including more than 21,000 children, and the intensification of suffering with every Israeli bomb dropped on ambulances and residential buildings. The statement called for a world where every person can live with freedom, safety, and dignity, but was seen by some as an attempt to shift the focus away from the suffering of the Jewish community.
