New York State has announced that it will not increase its minimum wage in January 2027. This decision marks the first time the state has frozen wages since a 2023 law was passed, which tied future annual adjustments to the rate of inflation and job losses.
The state's economy has experienced a loss of thousands of private sector jobs this year, triggering the law that forces the minimum wage freeze. Additionally, consumer costs have increased while confidence has decreased.
Other states, including New Jersey, California, Connecticut, Michigan, and Washington, will be raising their minimum wages beginning on January 1, 2027. Washington will have the highest wage at $17.73 an hour, while New Jersey will increase the minimum wage by 56 cents to $16.48 an hour for most workers.
The decision to freeze the minimum wage in New York has been attributed to the state's economic struggles. The state's governor, Kathy Hochul, has blamed the economic woes on the policies of President Donald Trump.
