What happened
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was booed and berated by anti-Israel protesters at a candlelit vigil in Union Square. The event, which marked the third anniversary of the Hamas-led attacks on Israel, was disrupted by a group of protesters who marched from City Hall to the vigil.
The protesters, some of whom wore keffiyehs, shouted insults at Mayor Mamdani, calling him a coward and demanding that he take a stand. Other chants included Mayor Mamdani take a stand and Shame on you. Despite the disruptions, Mayor Mamdani remained calm and stood alongside former City Comptroller Brad Lander.
The vigil was organized by Israelis for Peace and was meant to honor the Jewish victims killed by Hamas terrorists, as well as Palestinians who died in the subsequent war. However, the event was overshadowed by the protests, which began earlier in the day outside City Hall. The protesters criticized Mayor Mamdani for his perceived betrayal of Palestinian causes since taking office.
