A Panamanian-flagged oil tanker was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, injuring at least 12 crew members, mostly Indian nationals. Oman's air force evacuated the crew, with the injured taken to a hospital for treatment.

What happened

A Panamanian-flagged oil tanker, On Peace, was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in a fire in its engine room. The tanker, which had a mostly Indian crew of 19, was struck by a projectile while passing through the strait. Oman's air force evacuated the crew, with at least 12 reported injured, including 11 Indian nationals.

The attack occurred about nine nautical miles away from Oman's port city of Limah. The injured crew members were taken to a hospital in Musandam governate for medical treatment. The Indian Foreign Ministry condemned the attack and thanked Oman for its assistance in rescuing the crew.

The On Peace tanker is owned by a Dubai-based trading company and managed by a firm based in Hong Kong. It had reportedly been running dark through the Strait of Hormuz, with its transponder turned off, in an attempt to avoid being attacked. The tanker had previously discharged fuel oil at the port of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates.

The attack on the On Peace is one of several incidents of attacks on shipping in the region, with at least five commercial vessels reporting attacks since Saturday. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran, a designated terrorist organization, has been involved in some of these incidents, with one ship being warned that it would be fired upon unless it abandoned its attempt to sail through the Strait of Hormuz.
