Ontario Premier Downplays Delay in Volkswagen Battery Plant Opening
The Epoch Times

Ontario Premier Doug Ford says a two-year delay in the opening of Volkswagen's electric vehicle battery plant is not a concern, citing the creation of thousands of jobs once it is complete.

What happened

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has stated that a two-year delay in the opening of Volkswagen's electric vehicle battery plant in southwestern Ontario is not a cause for concern. The $7 billion factory, located in St. Thomas, is now expected to begin operations in 2029. The delay is partly attributed to a decrease in consumer demand for electric vehicles.

Volkswagen subsidiary PowerCo Canada has announced that the plant will have the capacity for next-generation battery technology and future expansion. The company has also hired EllisDon as the general contractor for the next phase of construction. Premier Ford expressed confidence that the plant will be completed and operational within the new timeline, citing the creation of thousands of jobs in the area once it is complete.

However, not all parties share Ford's optimism. NDP Opposition Leader Marit Stiles characterized the delay as concerning, citing the impact on workers and spinoff industries. Conservative MP Andrew Lawton also expressed concerns, stating that the community wants to know what steps are being taken to move the project forward.

The delay is not an isolated incident, as several manufacturers have delayed or scaled back their plans in recent years. This includes Honda, Umicore, Ford, and General Motors, among others. The auto sector has also been affected by trade disputes, including a 25 percent tariff on Canadian-assembled passenger vehicles and light trucks implemented by the White House.
