Ottawa announces $2 billion rebate program for home heat pumps to help Canadians save on energy bills. The program will run for eight years and provide rebates to 820,000 homeowners.

What happened

Ottawa has announced a nationwide rebate program worth $2 billion to encourage the adoption of heat pumps in residential properties. The program, which will run for eight years, aims to help Canadians save money on their energy bills.

The National Heat Pump Rebate Program is expected to launch in early 2027, with a preliminary webpage already available for Canadians to sign up for updates. The program will provide rebates to an estimated 820,000 homeowners, with low-to-median income households eligible for grants of up to $10,000 and higher-earning households eligible for a $2,000 grant.

The application process will involve verifying the chosen heat pump system on a federal product registry, submitting basic personal information and equipment specs online, and arranging for professional installation. Rebates will be processed after proof of purchase and installation invoices are uploaded, with payments made via direct deposit within five days.

The government estimates that the program will result in annual energy-bill savings of over $1,400 for households currently using oil, propane, or electric-resistance heating. The program is part of an effort to accelerate the adoption of heat pumps and reduce energy costs for Canadians.
