What happened
A lab worker at an anti-plague institute in Russia's Irkutsk region died, sparking concerns of a possible plague outbreak. The 28-year-old woman, who worked with dangerous pathogens, accidentally broke a test tube containing the plague bacterium Yersinia pestis. She later died of pneumonia, with authorities initially withholding information about the cause of her death.
Quarantine measures have been introduced, with around 200 people under medical observation. Several hospitals in the area have been closed, and masks have been made compulsory at a local aluminium plant. Residents have reported seeing people in protective suits and masks, and masks have been distributed in kindergartens.
The authorities have sought to reassure the public, with Rospotrebnadzor stating that the situation is stable and the woman died of pneumonia of unknown origin. However, the lack of clarity has fueled panic on social media, with some speculating about a cover-up.
A Russian epidemiologist has attempted to calm fears, saying that plague carriers in Siberia typically go into winter dormancy by early October. Despite this, concerns remain, and the incident has highlighted the need for transparency and clear communication from authorities in such situations.
