The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) has announced a significant change in its political operation. The pro-Israel lobbying group will no longer directly endorse and financially support candidates.
What happened
AIPAC will cease its direct involvement in candidate endorsements and financial backing, a strategy it has employed since 2021. Instead, the organization will focus on individual donations through its sister super PAC, the United Democracy Project PAC (UDP).
The decision is part of a new approach aimed at building a more strategic and nimble political operation. AIPAC believes this shift will allow it to capitalize on new innovations and deliver greater political impact.
The move comes after a months-long strategic review and amid criticism from some Americans who view AIPAC as a special interest group attempting to influence US elected officials on behalf of a foreign country.
Some politicians, including Senator Corey Booker, have refused AIPAC donations in the past. The new strategy may allow these politicians to accept donations from the UDP super PAC, which encourages individual contributions.
