What happened
A clash between anti-ICE protesters and police occurred outside a hospital in New York City where a wounded migrant was being treated. The migrant, a 28-year-old man from the Dominican Republic, was shot in the neck by a federal agent during a targeted enforcement operation. He is expected to survive.
About 300 demonstrators gathered outside the hospital, calling for Immigration and Customs Enforcement to leave the area. The protesters chanted slogans such as “From Palestine to Mexico, all these walls have got to go” and “We want ICE off our streets. No justice, no peace”. The situation escalated into a shoving match between the protesters and police, resulting in at least one arrest.
The migrant, who has reported ties to the Trinitarios gang, was shot during an attempt by federal agents to arrest him. A 5-year-old child was in the car with the migrant at the time of the shooting but was unharmed. The migrant has a prior criminal conviction and multiple prior arrests, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
