Publix is closing several stores in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina due to economic conditions and reduced consumer spending, with six new locations opening in other states.

What happened

Publix, the largest employee-owned grocery chain in the United States, has announced the closure of several key stores in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. The decision to shutter these locations may be linked to the rising popularity of GLP-1 medications, such as Ozempic, which have led to a decrease in food purchases. The supermarket chain reported a modest 1% increase in profits, but cited economic conditions and the Inflation Reduction Act as challenges.

The affected stores are located at 5577 Park Street N., St. Petersburg, 8250 Mills Drive, Miami, 828 Southern Blvd., West Palm Beach, and 4711 Babcock Street NE, Palm Bay in Florida; 1380 Atlantic Drive NW, Atlanta, and 2562 Shallowford Road NE, Chamblee in Georgia; and 208 Saint James Ave., Goose Creek in South Carolina. However, Publix plans to replace the West Palm Beach and Palm Bay supermarkets in the future, although no timeline has been announced.

Despite the closures, Publix is also expanding its operations with six new locations set to open this month in Alabama, Kentucky, Florida, and North Carolina. The new stores will be located in Athens, Florence, Independence, Bradenton, Fayetteville, and Sunset Beach.
