Russia's President Vladimir Putin is escalating attacks on Western leaders as his situation in Ukraine becomes increasingly dire.

What happened

Putin's forces have been targeting innocent civilians, churches, and children in Ukraine, and have recently bombed shopping centers and grocery stores to deplete the country's food supply. In a significant escalation, Putin has also begun targeting Western leaders who support Ukraine, including former US CIA Director David Petraeus and former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who were on a train that was bombed on September 13.

According to reports, Russian drones have hit around 40 trains in August alone, with the intent of bullying Ukraine's allies. France's President Emmanuel Macron has warned his security services of intensifying Russian aggression, while Poland's President Karol Nawrocki has pledged to take action based on facts, not wishful thinking.

The US has responded by signing the Lindsey O. Graham Russian Sanctions Act into law, which allows for expanded sanctions on Russian military figures and foreign suppliers. The US will also have increased authority to impose tariffs on Russian goods and sanction those responsible for the abduction of Ukrainian children.
