Nigel Farage threatens to ban trade union donations if the government targets Reform UK's donations. Two record donations of £36 million have sparked a debate on political donations.

Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, has threatened to ban political donations from trade unions if the government attempts to retroactively ban large donations to his party.

What happened

Two record donations of £36 million to Reform UK from cryptocurrency billionaires Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne have sparked a debate on political donations. The donations are legal under current British law, which does not set a statutory maximum on donations to political parties. However, Housing Secretary Angela Rayner has suggested that the government may impose a cap on donations and make it retroactive, potentially criminalizing the contributions to Reform UK.

Farage has warned that if the government uses such tactics, a future Reform UK government may change the rules on political contributions, including banning donations from trade unions. This would severely impact the Labour Party's fundraising ability, as trade unions have donated over £53 million to the party since 2010.

Farage also pointed out that trade unions have significant influence over the Labour Party, citing the Employment Rights Act and wage increases for union sectors as examples. He suggested that Reform UK will not award membership in the House of Lords to high-profile donors, unlike the two establishment parties.
