Rep. Thomas Massie has given War Secretary Pete Hegseth an ultimatum to resign or face impeachment, as the GOP blames the Iran war for its historic loss in the midterm elections.
What happened
Massie previously disclosed his plans to force a vote on impeachment articles against Hegseth when the House returns after the elections. The idea of Hegseth's impeachment is not far-fetched, as several GOP leaders have pinpointed the blame for their loss on the Iran war.
Vice President JD Vance and Sen. Ted Cruz are among those who have spoken out against the war, with Vance stating that the war was the reason for the GOP's loss. Cruz has also criticized the war, saying it has dragged on too long and has sent costs rising at home.
Massie's ultimatum to Hegseth comes as President Donald Trump has expressed support for the war secretary, but sources have indicated that the president is asking advisers about a possible removal. Hegseth has adversaries in the Senate as well, including outgoing Sen. Thom Tillis, who has problems with the war secretary that extend beyond the war.
