What happened
Rep. Thomas Massie has filed eight articles of impeachment against Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, accusing him of committing high crimes and misdemeanors. The articles allege various violations, including initiating the Iran war without authorization, defying congressional directives, and failing to minimize civilian casualties.
The impeachment push is a significant escalation in the long-running feud between Massie and the Trump administration. Massie lost his congressional seat in a primary rout to Ed Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL backed by President Donald Trump. Hegseth had personally campaigned for Gallrein before the primary.
The House must take up the resolution within two legislative days, and Republicans could move to table it rather than advance it toward an impeachment trial. Massie's effort is not the first attempt to impeach Hegseth this year, as House Democrats introduced six articles against the secretary in April.
