President Donald Trump's decision to allow Russia to supply diesel fuel to the US and global markets has sparked backlash from several Republican figures. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick plans to introduce bipartisan legislation to block purchases of Russian oil, while Rep. Don Bacon expressed support for the bill, arguing that lower diesel prices do not justify pressuring Ukraine to stop targeting Russian oil refineries.
Former Vice President Mike Pence and conservative commentator Laura Loomer also criticized Trump's decision, stating that it will help fund Russian President Vladimir Putin's military efforts. Other Republican lawmakers, including Sen. John Kennedy and Rep. Michael McFaul, have similarly criticized the deal and Trump's rhetoric.
Trump's announcement was framed as an opportunity to alleviate concerns over high domestic gas prices, which have been driven up by disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. However, critics argue that the deal will ultimately benefit Russia and harm Ukraine, which has been fighting a war with Russia since 2022.
