Riyadh Schools Switch to Remote Learning Amid Houthi Attack Threats

Saudi boys stand in line as a teacher takes the attendance on their first day back to school in Riyadh 09 September 2006. Five years after the September 11 attacks, US accusations, claiming the Muslim kingdom's education system is fostering Islamic extremism, continue. Saudi schoolbooks have lately been accused of promoting intolerance of not just non-Muslims, but also of Islamic sects other than the purist Sunni Salafi school from which the Wahhabi doctrine dominant in Saudi Arabia is derived.AFP PHOTO/STR (Photo by AFP) (Photo by -/AFP via Getty Images)

Schools in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, have implemented remote learning due to Houthi drone and missile attack threats. The move comes amid heightened Gulf tensions and near-daily attacks by Iran-backed Houthi authorities in Yemen.

What happened

Schools in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia's capital, have switched to remote learning due to concerns over Houthi drone and missile attacks. At least three schools informed parents of the change, citing instructions from Saudi authorities to remain closed for the week. The Saudi Ministry of Education has not commented on the situation.

The move comes amid heightened tensions in the Gulf and near-daily attacks by Iran-backed Houthi authorities in Yemen. The Saudi-led coalition recently intercepted two Houthi drones and two ballistic missiles launched at Saudi cities.

Parents have expressed frustration over the last-minute school closings and lack of clear communication from the government. The Gulf Cooperation Council has condemned the ongoing Houthi attacks, calling them a threat to regional security and stability.
