Russia and Ukraine have accepted a proposal for trilateral talks with the United States to end the war.
What happened
US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg to advance efforts to end the conflict. The meeting was also attended by Russian presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev and foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov.
According to a White House official, Witkoff and Kushner proposed a trilateral meeting at the technical level between the US, Russia, and Ukraine, which was accepted by the Ukrainians in Oslo and the Russians in St. Petersburg.
Putin reportedly agreed to return to trilateral negotiations with the US and Ukraine, with peace talks set to resume after November 10. The discussions with Putin also covered a post-war economic and prosperity plan, European security architecture, and plans for the upcoming trilateral meeting.
The meeting also saw the release of Stephen Hubbard, an American citizen who had been held in Russia for over four years on mercenary charges. Hubbard was released at the request of President Donald Trump, who had made a direct request to Putin in a telephone conversation.
