Russia is using tactics similar to those employed by Hamas to indoctrinate Ukrainian children, combining weapons training with ideological conditioning to shape young minds. Over 20,000 children have been forcibly displaced or deported, according to Ukrainian authorities.

What happened

A recent documentary, Ukraine’s Stolen Children, highlights the removal of Ukrainian children from orphanages, care facilities, and camps, with many being absorbed into Russian society through citizenship, adoption, and "patriotic education." This education includes military drills and practical weapons training for older children, as well as programs to reinforce Russian national identity and loyalty.

The methods used by Russia bear a striking resemblance to those used by Hamas in Gaza, where children are exposed to military content and activities, including summer camps where they are taught to handle rifles and participate in military drills. The goal of these programs is not only to train children in the use of weapons but also to condition them to understand the ideology and identity that underlies the use of those weapons.

The use of these tactics is particularly disturbing because it targets children at a young age, when they are most vulnerable to ideological conditioning. By teaching children to associate violence with loyalty, duty, or pride, Russia and Hamas are shaping the way they understand their place in the world and their relationship to their enemies. This can have long-lasting consequences, making it more difficult for children to develop independent thoughts and question the lessons they have been taught.
