Russian Lab Worker Death Sparks Medical Observation of Nearly 200 People
NBC News

A Russian lab worker's death from pneumonia of unknown origin has led to nearly 200 people being placed under medical observation, with international authorities calling for more information and transparency.

What happened

A female worker at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute of Siberia and the Far East in Russia died last week from pneumonia of unknown origin, prompting officials to place nearly 200 people under medical observation. The regional governor, Igor Kobsev, reported that no microorganisms related to the employee's work were found in her body, and there have been no new cases of illness among other lab employees.

A hospital facility where the worker was treated has been closed for quarantine, and Russian media outlets have reported that the woman was 28 years old. However, these details have not been confirmed by officials. The World Health Organization is aware of the reports but has not confirmed the cause of death.

International authorities, including the US State Department, have called for more information and transparency from Moscow. The US government is monitoring the situation closely, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio stating that while there is limited travel between the US and Russia, the situation could potentially spread quickly if not contained.

Medical experts have noted that pneumonic plague, which is caused by the same bacteria as the bubonic plague, can spread from person to person through airborne respiratory droplets. Rapid treatment with powerful antibiotics is necessary to prevent fatalities. The World Health Organization has reported over 3,800 suspected human plague cases between 2019 and 2025, resulting in 423 deaths.
