Russian drone attacks on Ukraine's rail network have increased, causing disruption and fear among passengers. The state-owned railway operator has reported a significant increase in attacks, with almost 60% of locomotives hit this year.

What happened

Ukrainian rail passengers are facing increased disruption and fear due to escalating drone attacks by Russia. Since the end of 2025, Russian drones have been targeting moving passenger trains, resulting in frequent evacuations and delays. In September alone, 5,831 trains were evacuated due to drone attacks, with an average of 205 trains stopped per day.

Passengers have reported narrow escapes, with some trains being hit by drones just minutes after they had passed through. The state-owned railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, has reported a significant increase in attacks on its rolling stock and stations, with almost 60% of the 521 locomotives hit since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion occurring this year.

The railway company has implemented precautions to keep casualties low, including evacuating passengers and crew members when drones are detected in the area. The company is also preparing for winter evacuations, with international donors providing support for winter evacuation packs, mobile shelters, and bus services.
