Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has arrived in Tehran for discussions with Iranian officials.
What happened
Lavrov's visit is aimed at addressing the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, with Moscow offering to mediate between the US and Iran. This development comes as attacks in the Strait of Hormuz have surged in October, resulting in increased oil prices. Brent crude prices reached a five-month high of $110 per barrel on Friday.
US President Donald Trump recently announced a deal to import Russian diesel, citing Russia's limited support for Iran during the war. In response, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned Trump against escalating tensions, stating that Iran has emerged stronger in the past and has unfinished business to attend to.
Araghchi also reiterated Iran's proposal for a seven-day ceasefire and a gradual reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The situation remains volatile, with the average price of regular gasoline in the US increasing to $4.30 per gallon, up from $2.98 before the war.
