What happened
A researcher at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute of Siberia and the Far East has died after being diagnosed with pneumonia of unknown origin. The 28-year-old researcher, Darya Shipilova, worked with plague pathogens, but Russian health authorities claim there is no evidence her illness was related to her work. The incident has raised concerns due to Russia's history of secrecy surrounding sensitive matters.
Retired CIA officer Dan Hoffman warns that Russia's handling of the situation is reminiscent of the Soviet Union's response to the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster, where information was tightly controlled and suppressed. Hoffman notes that the accumulation of such incidents, including the war in Ukraine and economic struggles, could ultimately impact Vladimir Putin's hold on power.
Russian authorities have stated that no micro-organisms associated with Shipilova's professional duties were detected in her samples. However, the lack of transparency and control over information has led to doubts and concerns among outside observers. The US is closely monitoring the situation, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio stating that the country is watching the developments closely.
