Samsung Smart Fridge Owners Experience Widespread Outages After Software Update

Dozens of Samsung smart fridge owners in South Korea experienced outages after a software update, causing food to spoil and highlighting the risks of smart home devices.

What happened

Dozens of Samsung smart fridge owners in South Korea experienced a sudden loss of power and functionality in their appliances after a software update. The affected products, predominantly Samsung Bespoke AI 4-Door refrigerators released in 2024 or later, displayed blank screens or error messages, indicating that they were offline. As a result, the fridges stopped keeping food cold, and in some cases, all cold air had escaped.

The issue occurred just before the Chuseok holiday break in South Korea and was reportedly caused by an error during Samsung's internal testing related to the software update. Samsung has since activated an emergency response protocol and is taking immediate action to address the issue, with service centers providing repairs.

The incident highlights the potential risks and challenges associated with smart home devices, which rely on internet connectivity and software updates to function. While the Samsung Bespoke AI 4-Door refrigerators offer advanced features such as artificial intelligence-powered content monitoring and expiry date tracking, they also introduce new vulnerabilities and potential points of failure.
