A recent attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, has resulted in significant casualties and damage. The attack, which occurred on Saturday, is believed to have been carried out by the Houthis, a group that has been involved in a long-standing conflict with the Saudi-backed government in Yemen.
What happened
According to local authorities, at least 12 people were killed in the attack, including citizens from several countries, and 309 were injured. The Saudi civil aviation authority reported that the injured included people in critical condition. The attack caused significant damage to the airport, with operations suspended until further notice.
The Saudi-led military coalition has condemned the attack, calling it a war crime and vowing to respond. The coalition has blamed the Houthis for the attack, although the group has not taken responsibility. The attack is the deadliest in the kingdom since 2015 and comes amid an escalation of fighting between Yemen's government forces and the Houthis.
The attack on Riyadh's airport was not an isolated incident, as another projectile fell near King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, eastern Saudi Arabia, on the same day. The recent escalation of violence has led to widespread condemnation, including from the US, the UN, and several other countries.
