Senator Thom Tillis has spoken out against a deal made by former President Trump to import diesel fuel from Russia, calling it illegal and a risk to American lives.
What happened
Tillis made the comments during an interview on NBC, where he discussed Trump's foreign policy and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He described the conflict as "an illegal war" initiated by Russian President Vladimir Putin and claimed that Trump's deal with Russia would have "deadly consequences."
Tillis also accused Trump of "tarnishing" the efforts of Senator Lindsey Graham to pass a sanctions bill and stated that he believes Trump's waiver of sanctions may violate the law. He announced that he would be releasing a statement with Senator Jeanne Shaheen to pressure Trump into reversing the deal.
The senator expressed concern that the deal would put American lives at risk, citing Putin's history of undermining the United States and his "cozy relationship" with Iran. Tillis emphasized that Putin would likely try to embarrass or undermine Trump at the first opportunity.
Tillis' comments come as he promotes his new book, How to Lose Friends and Antagonize Presidents, in which he discusses his experiences and opinions on politics and foreign policy.
